Been there, done that…
I have, as they say, ‘been around the block a few times.’
I was born in the 60s, one of 7 children, which meant I very quickly learned how to be independent and resourceful. I had a successful career in the corporate world, before joining the Police in the mid-90s, where I spent 15 great years getting to know more about myself and other people. I specialised in Police Training, got promoted to Sergeant and qualified to the rank of Inspector, before returning to corporate life in 2008. I held a couple of senior management roles in Learning & Development before taking redundancy in 2013. I guess I really only decided what I wanted to be when I grew up, was when I hit my early 50s!
My life hasn’t been boring and I’ve coped with many challenges – both personal and professional. I’m a human being. I’ve worn the T shirt and I get it. I get life. I get that it’s not always a bowl of cherries. The two things that have kept me going are resilience and determination. So if you feel like you’ve lost your mojo, or you don’t know where your career is going, or you want to do something completely different, or you can’t stand the life you have right now, or you just need someone to set you back on the straight and narrow, well, let’s talk.
Feel like you’re on a merry go round and can’t get off?
I was in the cops and going places. Or so I thought. Fiercely ambitious and determined to make it right to the top. Fifteen years in, I had one of those ‘What am I? Where am I? Who am I?’ moments. I felt like a square peg in a round hole. How was I going to get off this merry go round? How could I leave a secure and promising career? “What about your pension!” I heard them cry. “What about my life”, I said.
Through the power of coaching I was able to set out what I wanted and start working towards new and different life goals. That was in 2008. A lot’s happened since then. I’m now my own boss and am the happiest I’ve ever been, both professionally and personally.
What happened? I learned to love who I was and believe in what I was capable of. I turned my dreams into goals and now, I help others to do the same. Simples!
Put your own life vest on first!
A lot of people are in the habit of putting other people before themselves. Families, kids, parents. Always making sure that their needs are fulfilled – often at the expense of their own. I hear people say “I’m not that important” and “The kids come first” and “As long as he’s happy, I’m happy”. You get me?
Well you know when you’re sitting on the airplane, getting ready to take off? And you hear the Captain say, “In the unlikely event that the aircraft should hit water, please ensure you secure your own life vest first, before helping others”. Sound a bit selfish? Well not really. Think about it. How can you possibly be of any use to anyone else if you’re already drowning?
Coaching helps you to identify exactly what it is that’s missing in life, how to make changes and how to get what you want. Sometimes, it’s about putting yourself first. That’s not selfish. That’s sensible!
